And we get it: it sounds like you know what you\u2019re talking about, as if \u201c300 PPI\u201d is some kind of quality label.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But honestly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those three letters have been causing misunderstandings, frustration and mistakes for years. Time to clear things up. What really matters is not the number in your image info \u2014 it\u2019s whether the image is fit for the size you\u2019re using it at. And for that, you need more than just \u201c300 PPI\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PPI without context? Meaningless.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PPI stands for \u201cpixels per inch\u201d. It\u2019s the number of pixels you need per inch to print something sharply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But\u2026 <strong>unless you know the final print size<\/strong>, that PPI value tells you nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A 10 x 15 cm image at 300 PPI \u2192 you need at least 1181 x 1772 pixels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That same image in a newspaper at 200 PPI \u2192 787 x 1181 pixels is enough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A large banner viewed from afar \u2192 30 to 72 PPI will do<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So it\u2019s always the combination of <strong>size and resolutio<\/strong>n that counts. Not some \u201cmagic\u201d number. Without context, the question \u201c300 PPI?\u201d is empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens if someone simply asks for 300 PPI?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Images get blown up in Photoshop to 300 PPI \u2014 without any real quality improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor input gets disguised as \u201cprint-ready\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designers and prepress teams run into unclear expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deadlines get met with visuals that are\u2026 well, just bad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All because no one asked for what was actually needed: the right number of pixels for the right size, in the right use case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So what should you be asking instead?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not: \u201cDo you have this in 300 PPI?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But: \u201cWe\u2019re using this image at size X, for purpose Y. How many pixels do we need for a sharp result?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That way you give clear direction to your design team, photographer or supplier \u2014 and avoid the trap of someone \u201cmagicking it into 300 PPI\u201d without making it any better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And with large format printing? Pay extra attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For LFP \u2014 posters, exhibition stands, billboards \u2014 two extra factors come into play:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scale factor:<\/strong> designs are often created at 10% or 25%, not full size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Viewing distance:<\/strong> the further away the audience, the lower the resolution can be<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you stick to 300 PPI there, you\u2019ll end up with unmanageable files, longer loading times and unnecessary hassle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smarter: work with adapted scaled resolutions, matched to context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And what about logos?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one\u2019s simple: use vector files. AI, EPS or SVG. Always sharp, always scalable, always correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raster versions (JPG or PNG) are only fine if you know the exact size and resolution \u2014 and don\u2019t need to scale them up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blowing them up \u201cto get them to 300 PPI\u201d? That\u2019s the fastest way to a fuzzy logo in print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And that old \u201c72 PPI for web\u201d rule?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best to forget it. That myth belongs in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screens today run at much higher resolutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4K monitors: 150 PPI or more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smartphones: 400\u2013500 PPI is standard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And CSS? It works at 96 PPI<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For online use, you just work in <strong>pixels<\/strong>: 1200 x 800, 1080 x 1920\u2026 PPI doesn\u2019t matter there at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why this isn\u2019t a detail, but a workflow issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t just about image quality. It\u2019s about control. About collaboration. About clear communication. Every time an image goes wrong \u2014 whether because of blurry output or a last-minute argument at deadline \u2014 it usually comes down to one weak link: <strong>a vague image briefing.<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly where Catena makes the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Time to start handling resolution properly, once and for all?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.234), 17px);\">If you\u2019re responsible for campaigns, content or print, you want to know your visuals are right.
