Why everyone should try Adobe Firefly

Wherever you go, you’ll encounter artificial intelligence. On the news, on LinkedIn, and in the companies, you follow – everyone seems to be talking about AI. I must admit, I was incredibly late to jump on this bandwagon. But all it took to convince me was discovering the right tool. Over the past few days, I’ve been exploring Adobe Firefly, and let me tell you, it’s a tool worth its weight in gold. Adobe Firefly empowers everyone – whether or not you’re graphically inclined – to unleash their creativity.

Text to image

Perhaps the best-known (and most entertaining) application of AI is its “text-to-image” functionality. All you need to make the most of this feature is a head full of ideas. The initial results might need a little fine-tuning, but with its extensive selection panel, adjustments are a breeze. From playful fantasy characters to hyper-realistic product images, the possibilities are endless. Select the format, style, technique, effects, materials, colours, lighting, and composition you desire to achieve the perfect result. From this function, you can seamlessly move on to using the generative fill feature.

Generative fill

Generative fill probably sounds familiar to you. This feature was recently introduced in Photoshop Beta. Don’t have Photoshop, but still want to give it a try? Then Firefly might be just what you’re looking for. Generative fill allows you to customise images exactly the way you want. You can add elements, remove distractions, or even change the background entirely. While Firefly’s generative fill is more limited compared to Photoshop’s, it offers a great introduction. It’s a handy tool for anyone who occasionally struggles with seamlessly merging images or discreetly removing unwanted items.

Text Effects

Another exciting feature is text effects. In no time, AI generates the word you type with the effect of your choice. By default, as with other features, you’ll be presented with four different versions of your prompt. Not satisfied with the results? Refresh. In the right-hand panel, you’ll find several options to fine-tune your output. You can customise Firefly’s workspace to your liking – adjusting the font, background, text colour, and even letting your creativity “colour outside the lines.”

Generative recolor

Finally, there’s generative recolour. To use this function with your own designs, you’ll need to upload an SVG file (unlike the other features). The options here are more limited compared to the previous three functions, but it’s the perfect tool for creating instant variations of your design. A small tip: for the best results, ensure your SVG file includes a variety of colour contrasts.

Still in beta version

As impressive as the tool seems, it’s important to remember that it’s still in its beta phase. This occasionally becomes apparent in small details. For example, generating realistic hands can still be quite laborious. Additionally, not everything you create with the tool is currently permitted for commercial use. Another potential drawback for some users is that Adobe Firefly is, for now, only available in English. However, don’t let these limitations hold you back – dive in and start experimenting with the tool to its fullest potential! Even more exciting features are already in the pipeline, such as personalised results, text-to-vector, and text-to-template functionalities.

The future of content creation

Will you be generating all your content with Firefly? No, the tool doesn’t go that far. Despite all the resources available to us, it’s still challenging to create the exact image you envision. The best way to achieve your desired result is to use the tool multiple times – for instance, to generate the subject, an additional element for the subject, the text, and the background separately. Combine all these files in Photoshop to bring everything together into one cohesive and stunning composition.
