Creating packshots made easy… at the touch of a button for Boss Paints

More than 1,000 packshots a year and as many manually created labels: that was Boss Paints’ challenge. Thanks to smart links with their PIM and ERP systems, this process is now fully automatic. The result? Saving time, error-free results, and consistent quality. Find out how this automation transformed their workflow and what it can do...

Boss Paints is one of the most outstanding companies in its sector. A family business in a market dominated by multinationals. They stand apart from the typical paint manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer. Their vision and mission: to make the world more beautiful through colour.

Manual work with paint pots

Boss Paints creates over 1,000 packshots annually for their product catalogue, website, and other communications used to be a labour-intensive manual task. A tough job indeed! The process involved creating a label in Photoshop, complete with specifications, icons, designs, languages, and more. The label was then printed, placed on the correct paint pot, and a packshot made. This packshot had to be taken with consistent positioning, exposure, and lighting to ensure high-quality results. As you can imagine, this was incredibly time-consuming, especially when updates or corrections meant starting the entire process over again.

Making pack shots more efficiently with DDPS

Catena Company to the rescue. After previous successful marketing automation projects with us, Boss Paints asked if the packshot creation process could be made more efficient. The answer was clear: yes, it’s possible, with the Dynamic Data Publishing Suite (DDPS). It automates the creation process of packshots to the maximum. We offered a solution that simplifies the process by automatically formatting label content through a direct connection with Boss Paints’ PIM and ERP systems.

Now, Boss Paints benefits from:

  • Real-time updates, as soon as there is a new label or tag, the packaging is ready
  • Consistent quality which results in a unified product experience, at any time and through any medium
  • Reduced reliance on graphic specialists
  • New and modern output formats such as rendering a PDF on a 3D image, for example

Developing labels with one push of a button

By linking Adobe InDesign templates to the PIM database, labels are now automatically formatted while meeting diverse layout requirements. Icons are displayed with customised colours and text, tailored to specific needs. Legal requirements and regulations for these applications are also incorporated, ensuring compliance. The result? A print-ready PDF of a label is now automatically generated from an online tool using Adobe InDesign templates.

Automation has made manual packshots obsolete. For each package, a unique Adobe Photoshop template is created, customised to fit its specific size and shape (e.g. diameter and height). Variations, such as colour differences, are easily accommodated without affecting the dimensions. These templates are populated with product labels or packshots and delivered in PDF format. Outputs can also be exported as PSD, TIFF, or JPEG files, making them immediately ready for use in web shops, advertisements, catalogues, photo archives, inventory systems, and other publications.

“To do such projects, you don’t need a supplier, you need a partner. This role was definitely fulfilled. Catena Company collaborated with us, implemented the solution, and provided excellent support.” – Stefaan Geeraert, IT-Manager @ Boss Paints

Working with DDPS is highly time-efficient, enabling the automatic and error-free creation of labels. Literally, with one push of a button. The label is then seamlessly added to the paint pot, resulting in a finished packshot without any manual intervention.
